Love Your Brother

Reflections On The Book Of Obadiah

Obadiah 1:11 "On the day you stood aloof while strangers carried off his

wealth and foreigners entered his gates and cast lots for Jerusalem, YOU WERE

LIKE ONE OF THEM."

The love of a brother and the treatment of a brother are of high value to

the LORD (1John 4:19-21). In the book of Obadiah, Esau (Edom) received

judgement for how he treated his brother Jacob (Israel). His actions were in

every way displeasing unto the LORD. The Bible said because of the violence

against his brother (verse 10), overlooking injustice, personally mistreating

and also promoting others in mistreating him (verse 11), Edom received judgment.

Hmmmm.... does this sound familiar? Have you been guilty of this in any form or

fashion? Could relationships mean more to GOD than they do to us? Are we not

called to resemble HIM to a world who knows HIM not?

Esau didn't have a problem with himself because he felt secure in himself

(verse 3). He thought he was better off in many cases by his position than he

really was. Esau was prideful and in pride deception always sees an

opportunity. Could we think we're better off than we really are because of the

certain areas in our walk we have excelled in? We say, "I'm doing this, I've

done that LORD", and at the same time disregard the area of how we are treating

our brothers? We would rather compete with our brothers than support, walk, or

humble ourselves to our brothers. The wrong outlook, the wrong motive, the

wrong driving force with our brothers can bring in hate and dismiss love and

destroy the relationship just ask Esau and Cain. The competition between Esau &

Jacob started in the Book of Genesis and we now see the extent of it being

carried out by Edom in the book of Obadiah. Cain kills Abel because he got so

caught up in that his gift wasn't accepted instead of celebrating that his

brother's gift was accepted.

My brothers, to truly resemble CHRIST, we must go all in with it. Humility

must reign in us & love must live comfortably in us. We must be more mindful,

more supportive, quick to stand up for one another, glean from one another, more

sensitive, more compassionate, more open, and more receptive of one another.

Esau & Jacob showed us two people in this world, one that will be avenged,

redeemed, exalted, restored and those that will be judged, destroyed, conquered,

brought down all because of how they treated their brothers. Yes you are sharp

when it comes to you but what about when it comes to others? How much effort

are you putting into the relationship with your brothers? Is your relationship

with GOD alive while your relationship with others is dieing? Let us all ask

ourselves, "How much of a brother are you?"

Scripture of thought: "Therefore as we have opportunity, let us do good to

all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers."

(Galatians 6:10 NIV).
